PlasticRoad wins Dutch Water Innovation Award – category ‘Sufficient Water’

Yesterday the annual Water Innovation Award ceremony took place during the Water Innovation Festival in Utrecht. The PlasticRoad won the Water Innovation Award in the cathegory ‘Sufficient Water’. The Water Innovation Award is an initiative of the Union of Water Authorities. The award winners took a glas artwork by Gert Bullée home. The PlasticRoad is a concept of KWS, Wavin and Total.

    The organization about PlasticRoad

“Turning a need into a virtue. That is what defines the winner. Due to climate change the Netherlands faces heavy rainfall more often. And because cities are mainly paved, a sudden amount of water cannot be drained well. PlasticRoad offers a solution: installing roads  that buffer rain water. Even with a high level of ground water the PlasticRoad is still capable of storing and infiltrating 0,3 m3 of water per m2. Next to that the PlasticRoad only weighs 48 kg per m2: the lightest pavement in the world.”

Awarded by the Dutch Union of Water Authorities

Anne Koudstaal, one of the inventors of the PlasticRoad is proud of this great award of the Dutch Water Authorities: “The PlasticRoad offers a solution to make infrastructure climate proof. From the fast and sustainable installation and recycling of plastic waste to the hollow space for temporarily storing and draining rain water. The PlasticRoad team and the PlasticRoad partners are very pleased the Dutch Water Authorities rewarded these opportunities of the PlasticRoad. This is a great gratification for the work we put into it this year and gives us positive energy for next year.”
